							<title><![CDATA[Synthesizing Historical Significance]]></title>
							<description><![CDATA[<strong>Event Date</strong> May 21, 2012<br \>This workshop will focus on how historians determine what historical events, people, themes and issues are important to remember.&nbsp; Strategies will be shared to help teachers assist their students in understanding and reflecting upon historical significance using a strategy called RAFT.]]></description>

							<title><![CDATA[Math Competition]]></title>
							<description><![CDATA[<strong>Event Date</strong> May 23, 2012<br \>The Mathematics Competition is a team competition where student teams match their mathematical wits with other student teams from other schools.&nbsp; Students are challenged through written problems based on the California Common Core State Standards.&nbsp; Seventh grade students will focus on the areas of ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, equations, and geometry in seventh grade students.&nbsp; While eighth grade students will focus on the number system, equations, functions, and geometry.<br /><br />During the competition, students will have a limited amount of time to answer questions that are presented visually to each group.&nbsp; <strong>The competition is held in three phases</strong> as described below.&nbsp; Each phase will be based on the difficulty of the questions.&nbsp; The first phase (Warm Up Round) will have less rigorous questions (these will be from previous competitions) and will be quick response questions for 15 minutes.&nbsp; Each question will be limited to one minute of time for teams to find the solution.&nbsp; Warm Up Questions will be worth 10 points each.&nbsp; The second phase (Power Round) will have more difficult problems.&nbsp; Each problem must be solved within two minutes.&nbsp; Power Round Questions are worth 30 points each.&nbsp; There will be six Power Round Questions.&nbsp; The Third phase (Imperial Round) will have the most rigorous questions.&nbsp; Each question will be limited to three minutes of time.&nbsp; Four questions will be given.&nbsp; Each question will be worth 50 points.<br /><br />The seventh grade teams will compete first followed by the eighth grade teams.&nbsp; Each grade level competition should be approximately 45 minutes in length.&nbsp; Teams will be seated at separate tables.]]></description>

							<title><![CDATA[History-Social Science Competition (History Day)]]></title>
							<description><![CDATA[<strong>Event Date</strong> May 25, 2012<br \>The History Day Competition invites 7th and 8th grade teams from Imperial Valley schools (both public and private) to compete over their knowledge of History-Social Science.&nbsp; The competition questions will come from the California standards: world history (7th grade standards) and US history (8th grade standards).&nbsp; The competition consists of an oral multiple choice group contest.&nbsp; Geography and map questions are incorporated.&nbsp; First, second, and third place winners will receive individual medals and a school plaque.&nbsp; All students will receive a T-shirt and certificate.<br /><br />Teams who wish to participate need to register by the due date (Wednesday, May 16, 2012) and pay entrance fees ($50.00 per team).&nbsp; There are no refunds.<br /><br />Due to press coverage and photgraphy, all participating students must have signed released forms on file with ICOE.<br /><br />Specific details are provided in the guidelines included on the ICOE website under the division of educational services, academic events, history-social science.]]></description>
